THREE-DIMENSIONALITY

Here is a beautiful three-dimensional study of a lily bulb and plant with trumpet-shaped flowers.

The flowers and bulb are just tinged with color. It’s the care taken with the preparatory drawing and the shading that give each aspect of the plant the appearance of tangible realism.

Start with the line drawing in sepia, shading it carefully to create the shape of the bulb with sepia and ochre. Shade the flowers lightly with sepia, to create the depth of the flowers. Add the yellow, red, and green colors last.
